Inter Milan have waited 4 years now to be able to compete for the major trophy in the country, and the start of this campaign promises much for the Nerazzurri. With three wins out of three games there are the only club in the top division with a one hundred per cent record so far, one of which included a massive win against bitter rivals AC Milan. With four goals scored and only one conceded this sends the mind back to when Italian football was all about winning by one clear goal, but how effective this could prove for the club. With Juventus dominating the league with four league wins back to back, the competition is really heating up within the division, especially after a very disappointing start for Juventus who have only recorded 1 solitary point from a possible nine. After a unusually busy summer in Italy compared to recent years, times are changing in Italy, with more clubs having a better financial clout to work with and help improve not only their own each individual club but also the standard of the league with some major stars joining the Serie A this summer.
Can Inter Milan be the club to dethrone Juventus at the top of division?
The club has invested more this summer than they have in recent years. With Roberto Mancini returning to his former club last season, his ambitions for the club has been matched by the owner and have invested heavily. With former Arsenal and Barcelona Sylvinho at the club as Mancini’s assistant manager they have brought class and intelligence to the club as he is regarded as one of the best young coaches around, the appointment of club legend Dejan Stankovic as first team coach was a great move from the club, helping the new players integrate as a group and having his wealth of knowledge of the club to pass onto these players. From back to front the team has been strengthened and they possess a great depth to this squad. Samir Handovic in goal is regarded as one of the top goalkeepers in the world of football, highly reliable and is very strong in every department of his game; his ability coming of his line is top class.
Across the defence is where the biggest changes have occurred for the team. Mancini identified this as a problem area at the back end of last season after they suffered a 3-2 loss against Genoa. Miranda from Athletico Madrid and Jeison Murillo from Granada are two top signings at the heart of their defence. Murillo is a highly rated Colombian international who alongside and experienced Miranda gives the back line of the team a real strength. Adding Martin Montoya and Alex Telles in the fullback positions gives Mancini real options on both sides, with Santon, Juan Jesus and Nagatomo already there competing for the full back positions. In front of the defence was important for Mancini to improve, they lacked strength and discipline in the hear t of their midfield, in came the much travelled Felipe Melo and Geoffrey Kondogbia. Melo is an experienced Brazilian midfielder who really gives the midfield an added bite, his positioning is top class and really goes unnoticed in any team he has played in, while Kondogbia at 22 was one of the most highly sought after midfielders during the transfer window. His strength and dynamism is exactly what they need when playing alongside Melo, he can sit and hold the midfield while also going to join attacks. The real class Mancini has is the ability to play different formations now against certain teams if he needs to as so many of the players can adapt in different systems.
In attack Inter have one of the top strikers in world football currently in Mauro Icardi. The objective is to build the attack around him, and that is exactly what Mancini has done. Stevan Jovetic didn’t exactly get his form at Manchester City but if he can stay injury free he will provide and score key goals for this Inter Milan team. The last day signing of Ivan Perisic from Wolfsburg is a major coup for the club. This lad has top class ability, he can play on either flank or play of a striker, and he is the type of player that will do a job wherever he plays. The Croatian international will need to adjust to the change of leagues but that should not be a problem of his ability. Signing Adam Ljajic on loan from Roma gives another option out wide for Roberto’s men, and a real chance to resurrect his career. These players give Inter Milan a great depth as well, adding to a squad that already consisted of Gary Medel, Fredy Guarin and Rodrigo Palacio.
Roberto Mancini and his team have got off to the best possible start, they are not the only team to invest and improve drastically but they look like a side who right now are more than capable of taking that title away from Juventus.
